The Odyssey Behind the Scenes: Writing The Outlands

We're on a fascinating voyage in creating this film, and although it’s been some time since our last update, there's been plenty going on during the last several months since, and it’s high time we share some behind-the-scenes glimpses of how the story came to life.

The Genesis of the Idea

The core concept of The Outlands emerged from the desire to explore the very human struggles faced during an apocalyptic-like event. It’s a universal notion—we’ve all wondered, at one point or another, how we'd act if our world, as we know it, was coming to an end. But what if it's not just about survival? What if it’s about making morally complex choices, the type that defines who we truly are?

Crafting Complex Characters

The characters are, undoubtedly, the soul of this narrative. Our protagonist, Isaiah, is a gripping amalgam of intellect, skepticism, and a hint of reluctant heroism. His fraught relationship with his estranged son, Daniel has been a rich canvas to paint upon. Daniel’s pacifist principles stand as a poignant counterpoint to the violent backdrop of their world. This yin-yang duo offers a fresh, emotional gateway into a realm replete with conspiracy and betrayals.

Characters like Mac, Jude, Leah, and Evan aren’t mere supporting roles but instead, dynamic characters in their own right. Each has a backstory marinated in themes of loss, duty, and the weight of history. Dr. Ezra Levin, whose untimely demise pivots the plot, has been particularly interesting to develop as he embodies the moral and intellectual crossroads of the story.

Twists, Turns, and the Unpredictable Road

In storytelling, predictability is the enemy, and we’ve worked tirelessly to subvert expectations. Without giving too much away, let's just say that the betrayals and revelations are as emotionally charged as they are shocking. We've aimed to make each twist feel both surprising and inevitable; the way life often unfolds in its most critical moments.

The creative journey has had its fair share of bumps. Crafting dialogue that rings true, building tension in scenes, and ensuring that every subplot serves the main arc—it's a balancing act. This marks a significant milestone for the project, allowing us to shift our focus to the next crucial step: the script-writing phase. As we transition into this new phase, the excitement is palpable. This is where the narrative transforms from a skeleton into a full-fledged being, and we can’t wait to bring the intricacies and nuances to life on paper.

What's On Deck

As you already know, the "official" production website is up and running, but it's not done by a long shot. In just a few weeks, we have the first photo shoot scheduled with our principle cast, and soon thereafter, these images will start to cover the pages of this website as well as the other social media platforms we have ready to go.

Additionally, we will start posting cast interviews where you will have an opportunity to see this story through the eyes and viewpoints of those that will be ultimately bringing you, the fans, the finished product.
